“The most beautiful basic form is the square and finds its perfection both in two-dimensionality (painting) and in three-dimensionality in the form of cubes.”

Mats, what do you want to achieve with your art?
If I could make an impact, that would be pretty great (laughs). I can’t change the world, but maybe I can influence the aesthetics of everyday life a little. When someone likes something, it automatically implies taking a closer look at the picture or the cube.
How did you come to the decision to express yourself artistically?
I think every person expresses themselves artistically in their own way; the dancer in their movements, language and facial expressions for cabaret artists, in music through the interpretation of a piece — in everyday life, for example, it’s the art of listening.
Can you elaborate on that?
If a viewer doesn’t connect with the artwork, no matter how deep your thoughts were while creating it, it will be very difficult to get them to appreciate it.
The key is rather to create something that pleases them — once you’ve caught their interest, they’ll naturally want to learn more.
How long do you need to complete a painting?
Exactly as long as my lifetime — all experiences and impressions are united in the paintings and sculptures. With different experiences, the creative processes would look completely different. What’s more important is knowing when the artistic process is complete and recognizing the right moment to finish.
